When a Third Party (TPP) requests access to a bank’s Open Banking API, the bank must first establish a secure communication channel using the relevant information from the TPP’s eIDAS certificate.  Keeping this trust chain data updated is critical but time-consuming and requires continual maintenance.

How it works

  • PSD2 requires that ASPSPs use Secure Communications for Open Banking

  • For a Third Party to use its certificate to establish a Mutual Transport Layer Security (mTLS) channel, the Bank must already hold the certificate’s trust chain in its trust store.

  • Having the correct trust chains in place before a Third party tries to connect allows an easy onboarding process that can be automated.

  • Not having the trust chains in place creates obstacles and delays that may cause the Third Party to complain to the National Competent Authority (NCA).

  • The Konsentus Certificate Chain Service provides regular updates of trust chain data, via an API, enabling the entire process to be streamlined and automated.
